Drinks and Dinner in Melbourne CBD, Sorted

Alfred Place holds two distinct experiences behind one door. Upstairs, Bar Ferdinand pours cocktails in a room built around a botanical collection. Downstairs, 7 Alfred serves one dish and does it properly, steak frites, no distractions. Different ambience, different pace, different reason to book, and drinks and dinner in Melbourne CBD sorted without leaving the address.
Start upstairs at the botanical bar
Bar Ferdinand sits on Level 1, tucked into a heritage 1885 building above 7 Alfred. Twenty-one seats, terrariums on every table, and a drinks list organised the way a botanist would organise a collection: Rose, Fern, Camellia, Eucalypt, Oak Lawn, Arid, and Herb and Medicinal. Recipes rotate through the seasons, so a return visit rarely means the same glass twice. It is a bar first, not a restaurant. Come up for one drink or three, get a feel for the room, then head down to 7 Alfred when the table is ready. Reserve a seat at Bar Ferdinand ahead of time, particularly on a Friday or Saturday when the room fills fast.
Then downstairs for the one dish that matters
7 Alfred keeps the menu to one decision. O’Connor Superior scotch fillet, sliced thin and grilled to order, alongside tallow-fried frites finished with Murray River salt. Choose medium or well, then choose a sauce: chimichurri for a sharp finish, peppercorn for something classic, veal jus for depth, or umami butter if richness is the goal. Mustard is on the house. A green-leaf salad and New York cheesecake round out the table without asking for a second decision. Book ahead through 7 Alfred, especially if the plan is a table straight after drinks upstairs.
Booking the night
It’s dinner and cocktails in Melbourne CBD, split across two rooms built to work as one evening. Bar Ferdinand opens from 5pm daily, with last drinks at midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday. 7 Alfred takes last seating at 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 9:45pm on Friday and Saturday. A round of drinks from 6pm and a table booked for 7:30pm leaves enough room for both without rushing either. The two venues run separate reservations, so book each directly.
