The History Of Ananas And Why The Name Matters

Ananas is the French word for pineapple. It is also one of the oldest symbols of hospitality in the Western world.
When pineapples arrived in Europe from the Caribbean in the 17th century, they were extraordinarily rare and expensive. To place one at the entrance of your home, or to serve one at your table, was to signal something about how seriously you took your guests. The pineapple became a motif of abundance and welcome carved into the stonework of grand houses, worked into the ironwork of gates, reproduced in silver and porcelain as a statement of intent.
The name was not chosen casually. Ananas is a restaurant built around the idea that hospitality is a genuine act, not a transaction. The full glass replenished before you notice it is empty. The room that makes an ordinary Tuesday feel like a proper occasion. The pace that allows the afternoon to find its own length without anyone moving it along.
Located within the historic Argyle Stores in The Rocks, Ananas has returned to a building that understands what it means to receive people well.
